All manors were self-sufficient to provide for everyone that lived there. Serfs and peasants both worked on the land, but were treated very differently. Serfs were treated like slaves because they were property of the king however peasants had more freedom. Peasants also had to pay taxes to the king even though they worked on the land. Manors were like villages for the king and peasants. Manors were very unsanitary for people because they had dirt floors and during the winter people shared houses with the animals. Back then that was the right way to live but today many people wouldn’t consider that right. The king would have his own big house on the top of the hill, which was called a manor house.
The king’s manor house consisted of many rooms such as the solar, the chapel, the garderobe, and the great hall of the manor house. The solar was a quiet sitting area for the family, but it was also used as a sleeping room. The chapel was basically a church inside the manor house, which is definitely not something common for people to have today. Serfs were allowed to sit in the chapel with the king’s family, but of course they weren’t allowed to sit anywhere near the king’s family so they sat in the lower section. The garderobe was a bathroom, but it only had a toilet inside the room. The great hall of the manor house was a dining room for the king family and friends.
