In the beginning of history castles were made out of wood and mud, but both of those objects were very flammable. As years passed kings started using stone for castles which was safer. Peasants were never allowed in the castles unless it was an emergency because they were worthless to kings, nobles, and knights. Castles were a great source of protection to others during war and they were built on hills to see danger from farther places. During the Crusades many castles were used as forts to protect people.
The Normans (a group of Vikings) were the creators of stone castles during the middle Ages. These castles consisted of many rooms and different areas such as moats, dungeons, keeps, and murder holes. Moats were like a mini pool built around the castle to prevent invaders from undermining it. Dungeons played a big role in castles too since it was like a prison where they tortured others. Keeps were the most protected part of the castle because they were used defensively by inhabitants of the castle. Murder holes were holes in the ceiling to help attack enemies by throwing harmful objects through the holes. As you can see castles were like big buildings full of protection.
